Faculty to field: scope an industry research collaboration
A bounded brief connects academic rigor with an industry decision, without confusing a proposal with an approved partnership.
Executive summary
Original Bridgelytic editorial method. Examples are hypothetical, not client results or validated scientific findings.
- Separate the research question from the commercial objective.
- Agree supervision, ethics, data rights and IP before approved work.
- Feasibility, scientific evaluation and deployment readiness are different gates.
Start with two questions
An industry team asks what decision it needs to make. A researcher asks what can be investigated rigorously. Write both questions, then define where they overlap. A sourcing conversation, technical brief or preliminary discussion is not an institutional agreement.
Define the smallest reviewable scope
State the proposed method, inputs, exclusions, expected artifacts and criteria for stopping. Separate a synthetic feasibility study from participant research or live-data access. Identify which claims the proposed method could support and which it cannot.
Assign authority before access
Name proposed supervision and review roles, then confirm their authority through the appropriate organization. Agree confidentiality, access, retention, IP, contributor attribution and publication review. Determine whether ethics approval or another institutional process is required before recruitment or data collection. A company brief cannot grant academic credit or institutional approval.
Design evaluation before demonstrating
Specify a baseline, test conditions, inclusion criteria and how disagreement will be resolved. For AI, separate generated suggestions from human ratings and record abstention. For interfaces, use accessibility criteria appropriate to the proposed study while retaining the limits of the evaluation. NIST guidance informs risk practice, not scientific certification.
Make the handoff conditional
A protocol and feasibility report may justify a further study, revision or stop. A successful synthetic test does not establish field reliability, market demand or deployment safety. Commercial use requires its own engineering, legal, data and operating-readiness review.
Use a proposal that can be declined
Close with the research question, industry relevance, proposed supervision, permission dependencies and next review gate. State what resources remain unconfirmed. An invitation to discuss is not a promise of funding, publication, placement or formal partnership.
Collaboration brief
- 01

Proceed, revise or stop without overstating results.
Hypothetical research brief, not a partnership
An industry team proposes a study of human review in an AI-assisted workflow. A faculty researcher could help shape a synthetic evaluation protocol, subject to agreement and appropriate approvals.
The first output would be a reviewable method and feasibility record, not a deployed system or peer-reviewed result. No institution, participant or signed relationship is represented.
Action checklist
- State separate research and commercial questions.
- List methods, exclusions and stop criteria.
- Identify permission and ethics dependencies before access.
- Agree data rights, IP, attribution and publication review.
- Keep feasibility, scientific and deployment claims distinct.
