From research to market: keep the source evidence intact

A commercialization decision needs a traceable chain from research claim to application, buyer requirement and remaining uncertainty.

Executive summary

  • Research relevance is not the same as commercial readiness.
  • Separate observed facts, inference and unanswered questions.
  • A reproducible protocol makes critique and revision possible.

Begin with a bounded question

Define the industry application and the decision the evidence should inform. A technical paper, exploratory conversation or outbound response is not proof of market adoption. Record what each source can and cannot support.

Maintain an evidence register

For each claim, retain the source passage, access rights, date of access, method and known limitations. Distinguish direct observation from inference. Keep restricted sources separate from public evidence.

Use reviewable methods

Version the codebook, inclusion criteria and human ratings. Record disagreement and adjudication. AI may suggest categories or passages, but uncertain evidence should lead to abstention rather than an invented conclusion.

Test before translating to a market claim

Use a synthetic baseline, repeatability check and independent review before considering a permissioned bounded pilot. Technical repeatability does not alone establish demand, destination suitability or service readiness.

Preserve uncertainty in the decision

A decision memo should identify the application, available evidence, unresolved assumptions and the next test. Include supplier qualification and commercialization responsibilities without implying a signed program or guaranteed outcome.

Decision sequence

  1. 01

    Question

    Specify the application and decision.

  2. 02

    Source

    Preserve passages, rights and limitations.

  3. 03

    Protocol

    Version coding and evaluation methods.

  4. 04

    Review

    Adjudicate uncertainty and repeatability.

  5. 05

    Pathway

Define the next bounded industry test.

Illustrative application. No customer result.

Synthetic research planning illustration. A published robotics interaction method is considered for an industrial setting. The team documents which assumptions transfer and which need a new protocol.

The resulting memo proposes a supervised feasibility evaluation. It does not claim an institutional partnership, validated scientific result or commercial deployment.

Action checklist

  • Keep public and restricted evidence separate.
  • Record source provenance and access rights.
  • Version codebooks and human adjudication artifacts.
  • Report reliability measures with their limits.
  • Separate technical validation, demand and market readiness.
